What If A Christian Sins? “Whoever has been born of God does not sin” (1 John 3:9). This verse is not ambiguous but the church world is quite confused over what it means. Some people believe this means it is impossible for a Christian to commit a sin. There are two ways of looking at that. The first view is that it is actually impossible for a Christian to do something that is sinful. The second view is kind of the opposite and is really hypocritical; it suggests that nothing a Christian does is a sin even if it is a lie, stealing, or whatever. Few people really believe either view and common sense and reality confirm that neither can be correct. Most Christians, if they read this verse, simply dismiss the statement. The theologian Augustus Strong classified the statement as hyperbole and an ideal standard that can never be realized. The vast majority of Christians believe that whoever has been born of God will sin more or less every day in word, thought, or deed; however, that contradicts the inspired words of the Apostle John. It appears that modern Christianity is more about continual forgiveness without the responsibility to resist temptation. To be faithful to what the Bible says in the context of 1 John chapter 3, it is true that Christians do not commit sin; that is, it is not their lifestyle and they have grace from God that makes it possible for them to resist and overcome temptations. However, it is true that Christians are human and it is still possible for them to commit a sin. John acknowledges this in 1 John 2:1, “And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” For a Christian to sin is a sign of spiritual immaturity, it is not characteristic of the Christian experience. As a Christian matures he learns to submit to the life of Christ in him and he is lead further and further away from sin. What if a Christian sins? There is forgiveness. Rather than muddling through life in continual sin/forgiveness mode, who would not want a 1 John 3:9 experience? We would welcome comments from those that have such an experience or would like to have it.

What Is Holiness? People define holiness in different ways. To some holiness means fanaticism; to some it means legalism; to others it means getting excited in church services; but, to most it means something they think is impossible. Who can be holy in this life? But the truth is that holiness is something God requires of people—in this life. “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:15–16). God “chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love” (Ephesians 1:4). Salvation is an act of God that first restores the inward heart to holiness which then enables one to live in such a way there is no moral blame in the eyes of God. Holiness is not just doing good things or refraining from doing bad things; it is a moral and spiritual state brought about by what Jesus called the new birth—being born of the Spirit. When the moral condition of the heart is changed in salvation it most certainly does show itself in “all your conduct,” but it is not the conduct that makes a person holy, it is the presence of God. In a real sense, holiness is just obeying God. Holy people are not spiritual “goodie-goodies,” they are just everyday real people that have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ and are motivated to obey and live out what they understand of His teachings.
